Real Skulls, Real Science – Who Knew?

Studying animal skulls is just like being a detective. By examining real animal skulls, students will discover clues about how animals moved, what they ate, and their overall lifestyle. This hands-on approach is integral to scientific inquiry, where observation, information gathering, hypothesis formulation, and conclusion drawing are essential skills. It is a rare opportunity for students to be able to interact with and handle dozens of real animal skulls. This approach to authentic science completely engages students and sparks their curiosity.

About Our Classes

BioSkull Adventures has over one hundred real animal skulls for students to investigate one-on-one. Animal skulls serve as excellent tools for teaching about wildlife diversity across various environments and for understanding each animal’s role within its ecosystem. Skull Identification Classes offer both valuable information for educators as well as engaging, hands-on activities for students of all ages, helping them explore and appreciate the intricacies of animal biology and ecology, and encouraging them in scientific inquiry.

Each class is customized by grade level, including adult education classes, and meets Next Generation Science Standards design principles. Searching for clues about habitat, lifestyle, and diet enthralls students, completely engaging them and sparking their curiosity, affirming their abilities to acquire knowledge and to take ownership of their learning.

Adult-level classes are a unique way to continue education and professional development with the same opportunity to handle, measure, compare, and identify real animal skulls in this large and diverse collection.

Mission Statement

I am dedicated to advancing students’ education in environmental studies.  In presenting the Skull ID classes, I am continually rewarded by each student’s enthusiasm for  learning. Teaching about animals and their habitats through the study of skulls provides a dynamic and engaging approach to this important subject, and I enjoy working with students ranging from PreK to professional levels, tailoring each experience to fit their developmental stages and educational needs.

What People Are Saying…

Alex Welch – M.S. McCormick Biological, Inc. – Staff Biologist
Kat is very knowledgeable in the morphologies and functions evident in animal anatomies. She has assembled a first-class collection of some exciting specimens and invites her students to join her on a guided taxonomic skeletal tour. Delicate birds, powerful predators, grinding herbivores, Kat has them all!  During her class, I was impressed by how eager she was to field our questions. Kat met all questions, simple or complex, with an engaging and supportive demeanor. I had a wonderful time taking her skull identification course and I am looking forward to learning more from her next time!

Halie Polston – Director Heartland Charter School, Lake Isabella, CA
Kat Edmonson’s animal skull presentation is a wonderful and engaging way to teach students about animals and their adaptations. She presented her amazing collection of over 100 animal skulls to my group of students ranging in age from Kindergarteners to Middle School students. All of the students were fascinated. Allowing the students the time to touch the skulls and use what they learned to identify “Mystery Skulls” was a highlight of the program. We will definitely be learning with Ms. Kat again in the future!

Pam Alten – Kernville Elementary School, Kernville, CA
As a presenter,  her organization and communication are exemplary. She has a generous and well rounded collection encompassing  both large and small reptiles, amphibians, and mammals. Our students gained scientific vocabulary and awakened their curiosity to the wonder of skulls. But the magic didn’t stop there; Ms Edmonson shares her passion with grace and an understanding of student centered discovery. Students were challenged to use a hands-on approach to observe  the specimens and use what they were taught to identify a host of skulls. The skull talk has long been a student favorite at our school.

Kara Lofthouse – Wildroots Learning Center, Folsom, CA
My kids loved the skull identification class so much that my daughter wanted to do something similar at her birthday party! They still talk about it and can’t wait to do it again!
